Expedition to one of the region’s most remote and inhospitable regions of Amazonia, refuge of the feared and gigantic “Queen of the Jungle,” the anaconda. Based in unexplored areas, high in biodiversity, this itinerary is an ideal way to combine adventure and nature.

In excess of 8m (26ft) and 200 kg (440 lbs.), the female anaconda (Eunectes murinus), is the heaviest and possibly longest snake in the world. In length, it competes only with the Southeast Asian reticulated python (Python reticulatus). The anaconda and the black caiman (Melanosuchus niger), occupy the top of the Amazonian aquatic food chain, while the jaguar (Panthera onca) on land and harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) in the canopy.

Important

  • You must arrive in Iquitos a day before the starting date.
  • The air transportation used for this expedition is subject to the dates established by the Peruvian Air Force. The flight may be postponed due to climatic conditions.
  • We suggest having additional days at the end of the itinerary. In the event that the flight is suspended, the days lost can be recovered.
  • In the event that the flight used in the expeditions is postponed, Amazon Explorer will not take charge of your stay in the city of Iquitos, nor will you receive any type of refund for the days lost.
  • Clay licks: Only from June to November, when the rivers are low.
  • Wildlife is unpredictable, sightings are not guaranteed, but by going to a remote area and with records of anacondas greater than 20 ft (6 m) in the area, you maximize the chance of finding this species.
  • This expedition is open to highly motivated participants with a strong capacity for adaptation and who are in good physical and mental condition.
  • You must reserve a minimum of 30 days in advance.

Itinerary

Day 1
  • Departure by  a light aircraft or floatplane from the Iquitos Air Force Base.
  • One-hour flight to the town of Angamos located on the Brazilian border.
  • Meet with the expert indigenous trackers who will accompany us on this expedition.
  • Overnight in Angamos.
Day 2
  •  Organization of supplies and logistics before starting the river expedition.
  • Motorboat into one of the least explored areas of the Amazon rainforest.
  • Bird watching.
  • Arrive to a native community.
  • Overnight accommodations in a tribal community.
Day 3-11
  • Motorboat into the depths of the virgin rainforest.
  • Build camps in different areas.
  • Observe wildlife.
  • Fish for piranhas (Serrasalmus nattereri) and other species.
  • Hike in primary jungle.
  • Search for primates.
  • Search of alligators, snakes and other species at night.
  • Drink water from forest vines “Soga de agua”.
  • Explore clay licks “Collpas” (deposits of clay containing mineral salts where a large number and variety of animals congregate).
  • Identify animal tracks and footprints.
  • Explore remote lakes and flooded areas where aguaje palm trees (Mauritia flexuosa) grow, home to the gigantic anaconda (Eunectes murinus).
  • Search for the giant anacondas.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
Day 12-13
  •  Return by motorboat.
  • Overnight in the jungle and in a tribal community.
 Day 14
  • Return by motorboat until Colonia Angamos (8 hr).
  • Overnight in Colonia Angamos.
 Day 15
  • Departure by light aircraft from Colonia Angamos to Iquitos.
  • Arrive in Iquitos.
