Covering 2,080,000 hectares (5,139,784 acres), the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the most extensive protected area in the Peruvian Amazon. Its entire area is set aside for the conservation of biological diversity and sustainable use of the wild terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna.
This reserve contains an enormous amount of biological diversity: 449 bird species, 103 mammal species, 69 reptile species, 58 amphibian species, 256 fish species, and 1024 plant species.

Itinerary

Day 1
  • 7:30 am Transfer from Iquitos to Nauta city (2 hr).
  • Motorboat from Nauta to Santo Domingo (3 hr).
  • Entrance permit for the National Reserve.
  • Arrival to a village inside the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
  • Excursion by canoe for wildlife observation.
  • Nocturnal hiking exploration.
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a typical village house.
Day 2
  • Motorboat to a lagoon (3 hr).
  • Looking for pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Hikes in primary jungle.
  • Bird watching.
  • Exploratory hike in search of nocturnal animals.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
Day 3
  • Motorboat to another camp area (3 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Fishing for piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri).
  • Identification of medicinal plants.
  • Hiking through primary jungle in search of wildlife.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
Day 4 - 6
  • Motorboat to another deeper area of the jungle, to camp (6 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Hikes in primary jungle.
  • Drinking water from forest vines “Soga de agua”.
  • Excursions in search of primates.
  • Search of giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis).
  • Night excursion in search of alligators.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
Day 7
  • Return by motorboat (7 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Excursion by canoe for wildlife observation.
  • Nocturnal exploration.
  • Searching for tarantulas and other insects.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
Day 8
  • Return by motorboat to the village (3 hr).
  • Purchase of handicrafts (optional).
  • Return by motorboat to Nauta (3 hr).
  • Transfer from Nauta to Iquitos (2 hr).
  • 6:00 pm Arrival to Iquitos.
Departure/Return Location: Iquitos Hotel or Airport
