Covering 2,080,000 hectares (5,139,784 acres), the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the most extensive protected area in the Peruvian Amazon. Its entire area is set aside for the conservation of biological diversity and sustainable use of the wild terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna.
This reserve contains an enormous amount of biological diversity: 449 bird species, 103 mammal species, 69 reptile species, 58 amphibian species, 256 fish species, and 1024 plant species.
