Composed of tropical floodplain rainforests, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (RNPS) covers parts of several provinces within the region of Loreto. These include: Requena, Alto Amazonas, and Ucayali. It covers more than 2,080,000 hectares (5,139,784 acres) and is the most extensive reserves in the Peruvian Amazon. In 2015, it was designated as the second best place in the world to see wildlife.

Itinerary

Day 1
  • 7:30 am Transfer from Iquitos to Nauta city (2 hr).
  • Motorboat from Nauta to Santo Domingo (3 hr).
  • Entrance permit for the National Reserve.
  • Arrival to a village inside the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
  • Boat excursion for wildlife observation.
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a typical village house.
Day 2
  • Boat excursion to a lagoon (1 hr).
  • Piranha fishing (Serrasalmus nattereri).
  • Looking for pinks dolphins (Inia geoffrensis).
  • Hikes through primary jungle in search of wildlife.
  • Birdwatching.
  • Nocturnal hiking.
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a typical village house.
Day 3 - 4
  • Motorboat to a camping area (3 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Hikes through primary jungle in search of wildlife.
  • Identification of medicinal plants.
  • Drinking water from forest vines “Soga de agua”.
  • Searching for the giant tree, largest of the jungle "Lupuna".
  • Excursion in search of primates.
  • Nocturnal explorations in search of tarantulas and other insects.
  • Search for alligators and other nocturnal species.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
Day 5
  • Return by motorboat to the village.
  • Bird watching.
  • Night exploration in search of alligators and other nocturnal species.
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a typical village house.
Day 6
  • Canoeing.
  • Buying handicrafts (optional).
  • Return by motorboat to Nauta (3 hr).
  • Transfer from Nauta to Iquitos (2 hr).
  • 6:00 pm Arrival to Iquitos.
Departure/Return Location: Iquitos Hotel or Airport
Departure Time: Please arrive by 7:15 AM for a departure at 7:30 AM
