Program based on tracking wildlife in the Amazon Rainforest. A field reconnaissance will be carried out in remote areas, where there are indications of the presence of rare species such as jaguars and big anacondas. All kinds of species will be tracked, signs of presence, visual and olfactory such as footprints, traces and signs will be sought. Optimal areas will be located to place camera traps and observation areas. Fauna tracking techniques will be learned with expert indigenous trackers and jungle specialist Hector Vezirian.

  • Chances of encountering unusual species such as large anacondas and jaguars.
  • Learn basic jungle tracking techniques, both western and indigenous.
  • Learn to move safely in the jungle.
  • Photograph fauna, tracks and traces

Includes

  • Transfer from Iquitos Airport.
  • Land and river transportations included in the itinerary.
  • Air ticket from Iquitos/Angamos/Iquitos.
  • Slow boat type peke-peke.
  • All meals provided for duration of trip.
  • Purified water.
  • Permit from SERNANP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian State).
  • Permission to the Matsés National Reserve and Native Community.
  • Expert indigenous trackers and Amazon Explorer’s tour leader.
  • Materials: Mosquito nets and bed sheets.
  • Participants must bring their own light camping mat.

Important

  • You must arrive in Iquitos a day before the starting date.
  • The air transportation used for this expedition is subject to the dates established by the Peruvian Air Force. The flight may be postponed due to climatic conditions.
  • We suggest having additional days at the end of the itinerary. In the event that the flight is suspended, the days lost can be recovered.
  • In the event that the flight used in the expeditions is postponed, Amazon Explorer will not take charge of your stay in the city of Iquitos, nor will you receive any type of refund for the days lost.
  • Clay licks: Only from June to November, when the rivers are low.
  • Wildlife is unpredictable, sightings are not guaranteed, but by going to a remote area and with wildlife records in the area, you maximize the chance of finding.
  • This expedition is open to highly motivated participants with a strong capacity for adaptation and who are in good physical and mental condition.
  • You must reserve a minimum of 30 days in advance.

Itinerary

Day 1
  • Departure by  a light aircraf from the Air Force Military Base or Iquitos airport.
  • One-hour flight to the town of Clonia Angamos located on the border with Brazil.
  • Meeting with the expert indigenous trackers who will accompany us on this expedition.
  • Overnight in Angamos.
 Day 2
  • Organization of supplies and logistics before starting the river expedition.
  • Motorboat into one of the least explored areas of the Amazon rainforest.
  • Bird watching.
  • Arrive to a native community.
  • Overnight accommodations in a tribal community.
Day 3-16
  •  Motorboat into the depths of the virgin rainforest.
  • Build camps in different areas.
  • Observe wildlife.
  • Fish for piranhas (Serrasalmus nattereri) and other species.
  • Hike in primary jungle.
  • Search for primates.
  • Night exploration in search of nocturnal species.
  • Explore clay licks “Collpas” (deposits of clay containing mineral salts where a large number and variety of animals congregate).
  • Search and identification of traces and footprints.
  • Overnight in the jungle.
 Day 17-19
  •  Return by motor boat.
  • Overnight in a camp in the jungle, native community and town of Angamos.
 Day 20
  • Departure by light aircraft from Colonia Angamos to Iquitos.
  • Arrive in Iquitos.
