The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (PSNR) was created on February 25, 1972 in order to conserve the ecosystems and biodiversity of the lower jungle of the Peruvian Amazon. Some of the representative species that this reserve protects are: black caiman (Melanosuchus niger), river wolves (Pteronura brasiliensis), paiche (Arapaima gigas), taricaya (Podocnemis unifilis) and jaguars (Panthera onca).
