Pacaya Samiria is the second largest protected area in Peru and one of the best places for nature lovers to visit. The reserve is home to more than 1000 animal species and 1024 plant species. As well, it protects large swathes of tropical rainforest ecosystems that provide home to a significant portion of Amazonia’s biodiversity, which is recognized as one of the wonders of the natural world.


  • 7:30 am Transfer from Iquitos to Nauta city (2 hr).
  • Motorboat from Nauta to Santo Domingo (3 hr).
  • Entrance permit for the National Reserve.
  • Arrival to a village inside the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
  • Excursion by canoe for wildlife observation.
  • Nocturnal hiking exploration.
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a typical village house.


  • Motorboat to a lagoon (3 hr).
  • Looking for pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Hikes in primary jungle.
  • Bird watching.
  • Exploratory hike in search of nocturnal animals.
  • Overnight in the jungle.


  • Motorboat to another camp area (3 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Fishing for piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri).
  • Identification of medicinal plants.
  • Hiking through primary jungle in search of wildlife.
  • Overnight in the jungle.

Pacaya-Samiria Exploration

  • Motorboat to another camp area (6 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • During these days, we will do the following activities:
  • Hikes in primary jungle.
  • Drinking water from forest vines “Soga de agua”.
  • Excursions in search of primates.
  • Identification of animal tracks and footprints.
  • Excursion in search of giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis).
  • Night trip in search of alligators.
  • Overnight in the jungle.


  • Return by motorboat (7 hr).
  • Construction of camp.
  • Excursion by canoe for wildlife observation.
  • Nocturnal exploration.
  • Searching for tarantulas and other insects.
  • Overnight in the jungle.


  • Return by motorboat to the village (3 hr).
  • Purchase of handicrafts (optional).
  • Return by motorboat to Nauta (3 hr).
  • Transfer from Nauta to Iquitos (2 hr).
  • 6:00 pm Arrival to Iquitos city.

Includes:  Transfer from Iquitos Airport, land and river transportations included in the itinerary, private boat, all meals provided for duration of trip, refreshments, purified water, permission to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, native guides and Amazon Explorer’s tour leader.
