On this demanding expedition, you hike 19 miles (30 kilometers) through one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Once at the river, you build your own raft using natural materials and travel 16 miles (25 kilometers) downstream, relying on the current—and your own ingenuity.

This area is carefully selected for its exceptional biodiversity. It offers a rare opportunity for wildlife observation and photography in a truly unspoiled environment, making it ideal for those passionate about nature in its purest form.

Expedition Details

• Trekking Trial: 19 miles (30 kilometers)
• Raft / Dugout Canoes Navigation: 16 miles (25 kilometers)

Includes

• Transfer from Iquitos Airport.
• Land and river transportations included in the itinerary.
• Light aircraft from Iquitos / Angamos / Iquitos.
• Slow boat type peke-peke.
• Permission from SERNANP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian State).
• Permission to the Matsés National Reserve and Native Community.
• Expert indigenous trackers and Amazon Explorer’s tour leader.
• First aid kit, includes antivenom serum.
• Note: Participants must bring their own camping gear.

Important

• You must arrive in Iquitos a day before the starting date.
• The air transportation used for this expedition is subject to the dates established by the Peruvian Air Force. The flight may be postponed due to climatic conditions.
• We suggest having additional days at the end of the itinerary.
• Should the inbound or outbound flight used during the expedition be delayed, Amazon Explorer will be unable to reimburse any lost days from the program. We appreciate your understanding, as these circumstances are beyond our control.
• Wildlife is unpredictable, sightings are not guaranteed, but exploring a remote area maximizes the possibility.
• Clay licks: Only from June to November, when the rivers are low.
• This expedition is open to highly motivated participants with a strong capacity for adaptation and who are in good physical and mental condition.
• During these expeditions, in totally unexplored areas, it may be necessary to change the activities and/or the route due to unforeseen situations.
• These expeditions are extreme and high risky due to the inaccessible terrain and possible encounters with uncontacted natives.
• Book with a minimum of 60 days in advanced.

Day 1

• You depart by plane from the Iquitos Air Force Military Base.
• After a one-hour flight, you arrive in the town of Angamos, right on the Brazilian border.
• There, you meet the expert indigenous trackers who accompany you throughout the expedition.
• Overnight in Angamos.

Day 2

• Organization of supplies and logistics before starting the river expedition.
• Then, you travel by motorboat into one of the most pristine and unexplored regions of the Amazon rainforest.
• You enjoy birdwatching along the way.
• You arrive at a native community and spend the night in a traditional home.

Day 3-4

• You continue deeper into the jungle by motorboat, navigating through remote waterways.
• You set up camps along the riverbanks and sleep in the jungle, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 5-18

• You begin a demanding 19-mile (30-kilometer) trek through untouched rainforest terrain.

During this stage you do the following:

• Build shelters in various jungle locations.
• Explore the forest in search of wildlife, both during the day and at night.
• Track animals in collpas—mineral-rich clay areas where many species gather.
• Look for jaguar tracks and signs of their presence.
• Search for anacondas in lagoons and aguajales (swamps).
• Gather your food directly from the jungle.
• Sleep deep in the jungle, fully immersed in nature.

 Day 19-22

• You reach the riverbanks, deep within the jungle.
• Using local materials, you build rafts or canoes and begin a thrilling 16-mile (25-kilometer) journey downstream.
• You spend your nights in the heart of the wilderness.

Day 23

• You return by motorboat to a native community and spend the night in a traditional house.

Day 24

• You continue by motorboat for an 8-hour ride back to the town of Colonia Angamos.
• Overnight stay in Angamos.

Day 25

• You conclude your expedition with a return flight from Angamos to Iquitos.
• Arrival in Iquitos.
