The journey begins with a 19-mile (30 km) trek through dense, humid jungle. The terrain is challenging, the weather unpredictable, and the environment intense—but every step takes you deeper into a world shaped entirely by nature. Reaching the river’s source, you craft canoes from palm trunks using traditional techniques, then navigate 50 miles (80 km) downstream until you arrive at a remote indigenous community.

This expedition demands focus, endurance, and adaptability. It’s more than a physical challenge—it’s a rare opportunity to disconnect from modern life and engage directly with one of the planet’s richest ecosystems.

The region has been carefully selected for its extraordinary biodiversity and minimal human presence. It offers ideal conditions for wildlife observation and nature photography.

Expedition Details

• Trekking Trial: 25 miles (40 km)
• Dugout Canoes Navigation: 50 miles (80 km)

Includes

• Transfer from Iquitos Airport.
• Land and river transportations included in the itinerary.
• Light aircraft from Iquitos /Angamos / Iquitos.
• Slow boat type peke-peke.
• Permission from SERNANP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian State).
• Permission to the Matsés National Reserve and Native Community.
• Expert indigenous trackers and Amazon Explorer’s tour leader.
• First aid kit, includes antivenom serum.
• Note: Participants must bring their own camping gear.

Important

• You must arrive in Iquitos a day before the starting date.
• The air transportation used for this expedition is subject to the dates established by the Peruvian Air Force. The flight may be postponed due to climatic conditions.
• We suggest having additional days at the end of the itinerary.
• Should the inbound or outbound flight used during the expedition be delayed, Amazon Explorer will be unable to reimburse any lost days from the program. We appreciate your understanding, as these circumstances are beyond our control.
• Wildlife is unpredictable, sightings are not guaranteed, but exploring a remote area maximizes the possibility.
• Clay licks: Only from June to November, when the rivers are low.
• This expedition is open to highly motivated participants with a strong capacity for adaptation and who are in good physical and mental condition.
• During these expeditions, in totally unexplored areas, it may be necessary to change the activities and/or the route due to unforeseen situations.
• These expeditions are extreme and high risky due to the inaccessible terrain and possible encounters with uncontacted natives.
• Book with a minimum of 60 days in advanced.
• LIMITED SPACES: 6 participants.

Day 1

• Depart by plane from the Iquitos Air Force Military Base.
• After a one-hour flight, you arrive at the town of Angamos, located on the Brazilian border.
• There, you meet our expert indigenous trackers who accompany you on this expedition.
• Stay overnight in Angamos.

Day 2

• Organization of supplies and logistics before starting the river expedition.
• Navigate by motorboat to one of the least explored areas of the Amazon rainforest.
• Watch birds along the way.
• Arrive at a native community.
• Stay overnight in a typical house of the native community.

Day 3-4

• Continue the expedition by traveling deeper into the jungle via motorboat.
• Construct camps on the river bank.
• Sleep in the jungle, surrounded by its sounds.

Day 5–14

• Begin your trek into the heart of the jungle, traversing uncharted territory for a distance of 19 miles (30 km).
• Search for animals during your trek through the jungle.
• Sleep deep within the jungle, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 15–27

• Reach the headwater of the river deep within the jungle.
• Build dugout canoes.
• Go downstream for 50 miles (80 km).

During this stage you do the following:

• Build shelters in different areas of the jungle.
• Explore in search of animals during the day and night.
• Track wildlife in Collpas (clay area containing mineral salts where a large number and variety of animals congregate to ingest these salts).
• Search for jaguar tracks and footprints.
• Search for anaconda in lagoons and Aguajales (swamps).
• Get food provided by the jungle.
• Sleep deep in the jungle, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 28

• Arrive at a native community.
• Spend the night in a traditional house within the native community.

Day 29

• Return by motorboat to the village of Colonia Angamos (8 h).
• Stay overnight in Angamos.

Day 30

• Depart by plane from Angamos to Iquitos.
• Arrive in Iquitos.
