The expedition begins with a challenging 25-mile (40 km) hike through dense, humid rainforest to the source of a river. From there, you build your own canoes and paddle 19 miles (30 km) downstream to reach a remote indigenous community.

You traverse demanding terrain where rich biodiversity thrives in one of the last truly wild environments on Earth. This route is selected for its intensity and isolation—an unforgettable challenge for those seeking full immersion in nature and their own resilience.

Expedition Details

• Trekking Trial: 25 miles (40 km)
• Raft / Dugout Canoes Navigation: 19 miles (30 km)

Includes

• Transfer from Iquitos Airport.
• Land and river transportations included in the itinerary.
• Light aircraft from Iquitos /Angamos / Iquitos.
• Slow boat type peke-peke.
• Permission from SERNANP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian State).
• Permission to the Matsés National Reserve and Native Community.
• Expert indigenous trackers and Amazon Explorer’s tour leader.
• First aid kit, includes antivenom serum.
• Note: Participants must bring their own camping gear.

Important

• You must arrive in Iquitos a day before the starting date.
• The air transportation used for this expedition is subject to the dates established by the Peruvian Air Force. The flight may be postponed due to climatic conditions.
• We suggest having additional days at the end of the itinerary.
• Should the inbound or outbound flight used during the expedition be delayed, Amazon Explorer will be unable to reimburse any lost days from the program. We appreciate your understanding, as these circumstances are beyond our control.
• Wildlife is unpredictable, sightings are not guaranteed, but exploring a remote area maximizes the possibility.
• Clay licks: Only from June to November, when the rivers are low.
• This expedition is open to highly motivated participants with a strong capacity for adaptation and who are in good physical and mental condition.
• During these expeditions, in totally unexplored areas, it may be necessary to change the activities and/or the route due to unforeseen situations.
• These expeditions are extreme and high risky due to the inaccessible terrain and possible encounters with uncontacted natives.
• Book with a minimum of 60 days in advanced.
• LIMITED SPACES: 6 participants.

Day 1

• Depart from the Iquitos Air Force Military Base by plane.
• You’ll take a one-hour flight to the remote town of Angamos, right on the Brazilian border.
• Meet your expert indigenous trackers who will guide you throughout this incredible expedition.
• Spend the night in Angamos.

Day 2

• Organization of supplies and logistics before starting the river expedition.
• Navigate by motorboat to one of the most pristine and unexplored regions of the Amazon rainforest.
• Observe the incredible birdlife in this untouched environment.
• Arrive at a native community and immerse yourself in their unique culture.
• Spend the night in a traditional house, experiencing authentic local living.

Day 3

• Continue the expedition, navigating deeper into the jungle by motorboat.
• Actively participate in building camps along the riverbanks.
• Spend the night in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by the captivating sounds of the rainforest.

Day 4-22

• You begin the trek into the heart of the jungle, crossing uncharted territory over a distance of 25 miles (40 kilometers).

During this stage you do the following:

• Build shelters in different areas of the jungle.
• Explore the rainforest by day and night in search of wildlife.
• Track animals in collpas—clay-rich areas where a wide variety of species gather to consume mineral salts.
• Look for jaguar tracks and other signs of their presence.
• Search for anacondas in lagoons and aguajales (Amazonian swamps).
• Find and gather food provided by the jungle.
• Sleep deep in the rainforest, surrounded by the natural sounds of the jungle at night.

Day 23-27

• You reach the riverbanks, deep within the jungle.
• Build a raft or canoe to travel 19 miles (30 kilometers) downstream.
• You spend your nights in the heart of the wilderness.

Day 28

• You return by motorboat to a native community and spend the night in a traditional house.

 Day 29

• You continue by motorboat for an 8-hour ride back to the town of Colonia Angamos.
• Overnight stay in Angamos.

Day 30

• You conclude your expedition with a return flight from Angamos to Iquitos.
• Arrival in Iquitos.
